The dream of creating a dedicated heritage hub for Te Puke is still very much alive, even as plans for its location evolve. While the initial hope of using the former Mitre 10 building has fallen through, the team behind Experience Te Puke Kiwifruit Capital of the World is not discouraged.
“It’s not about the building,” said Western Bay Heritage Trust member Sue Matthews at a recent Te Puke Community Board meeting. The focus remains on the community’s vision to bring our history to life.
The Vision is Clear
The proposed hub will feature a permanent exhibition dedicated to the incredible story of the kiwifruit industry. This core display will be complemented by a rotating series of temporary exhibitions, drawing from the extensive collection of the Western Bay Museum. This approach ensures there will always be something new to explore.
The goal is to create a dynamic space that celebrates our journey from humble beginnings to a global industry, and to share other significant historical events that have shaped our district.
Community Support is Key
The project has already received strong backing, with Seeka committing as a Gold sponsor. This support is a powerful vote of confidence, but more is needed to reach the funding target. The team is calling on the community to help make this dream a reality.
There are several ways to get involved:
- Platinum Sponsor: $30,000
- Gold Sponsor: $20,000 (committed by Seeka)
- Silver Sponsor: $10,000
- Bronze Sponsor: $5,000
- Friend of the Hub: $1,000
“It is time for the community to support this exciting opportunity,” Sue Matthews urged, “if you are part of the kiwifruit industry or wish to support telling other significant Te Puke historical events.”
Every pledge brings them closer to securing the perfect location. Once the right building is found, the exhibitions are ready to be installed, allowing the project to move forward quickly.
